How I read the big numbers
390,625 is 5^8. I notice the arithmetic, and I still cite DexDB rather than claiming a formula the site does not print. “Thousands” on the official homepage and the launch trailer is the compatible vague number: thousands is true of many species, and it does not confirm 390,625. The 13 species with no coat are a remainder (361 − 348). I have not copied their names onto this page.
If you are hunting a coat, the only switch I can point at is Color Variants. The current coats page does not publish a numerical shiny encounter rate. I would not assume they share a rate.
Questions
What is a coat?
A wild color variant. The official site says thousands of them. DexDB counts 348 species that can have one and 13 that cannot.
Which species has the most coats?
Venggal, at 390,625 on DexDB. Farfetch’d, Madame, and Mollusweet sit at 350,625.
Do shinies roll coats?
DexDB says no. A shiny uses its own colors and skips the coat roll.
